These techniques are used by prolific songwriters and topliners across various styles, and we are sure to feature some of your favourites as well. We are continuing our series on toplining by explaining how rhythm plays into creating a topline, how it drives the energy forward and how a simple melody can be very catchy with the right rhythm. We show that a simple rhythm can be quite effective, we also demonstrate the importance of utilising space in a topline as well as how the number of syllables affect the energy of a topline.

We then show how to combine all of these approaches to crate contrast between sections. Here we introduce the important concept of an anacrusis and show how it can help link various parts of the topline together for a coherent song.
