We left Singapore behind and caught a bus across the border to the Southern most town in Malaysia, Johor Bahru. We really had no idea what to expect, but took the first days in a nice hotel learning how to eat in this new country. Malaysia is so different to Singapore, especially being a predominantly Muslim country right in the middle of Asia. But like with almost everywhere I travel, the people were friendly and the sites a great mix of new and familiar.

It took awhile to get used to the new foods and what to order, but once we did, I think Malaysian food is up there with some of my favorite in the world, especially as they have such an amazing mix of Malaysian, Chinese and Indian, and the results of mixing those three cultures and foods together.

We got delayed in Johor because of Chinese New Year, but that was fine as it gave us an extra day to get accustomed to eating (our favorite travel past time) some truly unique and interesting dishes I'd never heard of before, like Otak-Otak or chee cheong fun. So many flavours.

Once in Melaka we were lucky enough to stay in a hotel/Chinese temple for the local community, we watched Dragon Dances and strolled through the lively vibrant night markets. Just our first day in Malacca was a huge adventure, and there is so much more to come!
