The 2024 MG3 is a far cry from its second-generation predecessor, which was sold for an astonishing 13 years. Thankfully, the third-generation light hatchback is all-new, with it led by a much more contemporary 'self-charging' series-parallel hybrid powertrain, which is in the same style as its direct rival, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Yes, a familiar 81kW/142Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine is the entry-level option, but the so-called Hybrid+ pairs a similarly sized 75kW/128Nm unit with an electric motor to deliver a hearty combined power output of 155kW. But it's not just about straight-line performance, as the latter's petrol use is just 4.3L/100km on the combined-cycle test, making it 1.7L/100km more fuel efficient than the cheaper option.

But as CarsGuide Deputy News Editor John Law finds out in this expert review, you pay a premium for the new MG3 Hybrid+ on test here.
