Newcomerstown is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In the late 1700's this was the largest Delaware Indian Village on the Tuscarawas River, with 700 residents. Chief Newcomer was the leader of the western Delaware here, and they called the village Gekelmukpechunk. Early French traders and English settlers named the village Newcomerstown after the chief. The Temperance Tavern Museum is a 1841 Inn which was known for passengers on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Newcomerstown was the Ohio town that Cy Young called home. He was the American Major League Baseball Pitcher. Born March 29, 1867 - November 4, 1955. Woody Hayes was also from Newcomerstown and served as head football coach at Ohio State University from1951 to 1978. The Temperance Tavern Museum houses collections of Woody Hayes and Cy Young memorabilia.
