Just outside the historic downtown area of St. Augustine north of Uptown San Marco is one of the most inspiring destinations in Florida. Fort Mose was the first legally-sanctioned free African settlement in America. Often referred to as the Original Underground Railroad, this place was a refuge for enslaved Africans who escaped from British plantations in the Carolinas and Georgia. The Spanish offered them freedom and land in exchange for their allegiance and conversion to Catholicism. On this episode, I take you to Fort Mose Historic State Park where we together will experience the Flight to Freedom event, a living history showcase that recreates the journey of the freedom seekers. I’ll also tell you about an exciting new project to construct a replica of the 18th century fort. Come along to discover the true meaning of freedom at Fort Mose, a symbol of courage and resilience.
