The Baltic Campaigns of 1854 & 1855 are an almost forgotten sideshow of the Crimean War.
A Anglo-French fleet spent both summer's enforcing a blockade on Russia (& the Grand Duchy of Finland) and bombarded several forts.

This campaign is often called the Aland War.

It was in one of these encounters during the Battle of Bomarsund 1854 that the first Victoria Cross was awarded.

The first Victoria Cross hero was Mate Charles Davis Lucas, who very cooly threw a live shell overboard when it landed on the deck of his ship.

By his actions not a single member of his crew were killed or injured, and the ship (HMS Hecla) was undamaged.

Lucas was presented with his VC by Queen Victoria at the very first award ceremony of the new medal for valour at Hyde Park in 1857.
Despite being the first person to be awarded the Victoria Cross, he was the fourth in line as the medals were presented in order of rank.

My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
