REALLY THAT GOOD is a new kind of film-criticism series, built around the radical premise that just because "everyone knows" a movie is a classic doesn't mean it stops being worth a deeper look.

That THE AVENGERS changed the landscape of action cinema in general and superhero movies in particular isn't in dispute, and in the wake of huge returns for its sequel AGE OF ULTRON and the ongoing success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe it's stature as a modern pop-culture classic is well-assured. But is that all there is to it?

With curmudgeonly critics already weighing in about "superhero fatigue" and the mixed success of other studios attempting the "cinematic universe" gambit, many are beginning to ask if the potency of Joss Whedon's blockbuster team-up has been overstated - or even overrated? Have fanboys, fangirls, comic-book devotees and continuity-mongers gone too far in proclaiming its greatness, or is THE AVENGERS... Really That Good?
