Sirui 24mm 35mm 55mm T1.2 Nightwalker Cine Lenses 4K Video Test (PART ONE)
The new Sirui Night Walker series Cine lenses are here. Thank you Sirui for letting me test out these beautiful lenses. First thing I gotta say is, the build quality is superb. And the brand new metal color looks beautiful. It matches the C70 really well. The compact design and light weight makes the run and gun shooting a lot easier. There is one thing that I like about the night walker is, all three lenses have the same 67mm front filter thread, you can easily find filters for it. Unlike some of the Cine lens that goes all the way to 114mm filter thread. Which no way you would be able to find filer for it unless you go for a Matt box. As I do a lot of run and gun type of shooting. Smaller the better.

So the 24mm, 35mm and 55mm are the Night Walker series. And they all have the same maximum aperture of T1.2. Meaning you can see through the dark. (Part 2 is coming soon) And during my test, I was really surprised even at f/1.2. The image still looking really sharp. And not just about the sharpness, its the detail coming out of the lens. It doesn’t have the digital look. Which is awesome.

So these lenses are all manual focus, so when using them on a gimbal are not that easy. Especially if you wanna shoot it wide open. During my test, I did try it for so many times just to get the focus right while moving the gimbal at the same time. And when you use the Canon C70 12Bit RAW, there is no IBIS and you can’t even enable the Digital IS. So just keep that in mind. And speaking of gimbal, I like to shoot something a bit wider. The 24mm might be a bit tight after the Super35mm crop. Hopefully we get to see something like 10mm or 16mm in the future.

Little Tip
Also I found these 3 lenses sort of work on full frame cameras. (Tested on Canon R3) But you might need to switch on the Digital IS first. So for the 55mm T1.2 lens, you don’t have to enable the Digital IS. But the top and the bottom have little bit of the vignetting. If you are going to put black bars on your video. Then you can surely shoot it on full frame mode. Then if you have the Digital IS turned on, the vignetting will be gone right away. But the other two 24mm T1.2 and 35mm T1.2 you must have the Digital IS on. Otherwise the vignetting is very noticeable. And for the 24mm, you must enable the Enhanced IS to get rid of the vignetting entirely. Normal Digital IS isn’t enough for that lens.

Mind you, these are just a little tip. But I do not recommend just buying these lenses for full frame cameras. As they were not made for full frame . There might be some sharpness lost or weird distortion.

Over all, I really love this Sirui Night Walker set. They are really nice. Even though I find that I use the 55mm a lot more. As I love shooting with a long lens. I think Sirui has done a fantastic job of bringing a new affordable but really high quality cine lenses for us. I’m going to do a part two with just focusing on lowlight performance. (Coming soon)
