This Week, we are going to be planting a Sabal minor, or Dwarf Palmetto, which is one of the two cold hardy palms- Needle palm is the other. While it’s not ideal to be planting a marginally hardy plant before the threat of nasty cold is over (hard frosts are fine- really it’s anything below 20°F again, unless there’s new growth)
This plant is fully acclimated to cold weather and doesn’t have any new growth. It’s important when you’re planting shrubs, palms, and all that good stuff, to not plant them to deeply. However, during the winter, you can mulch the crown (where the stems meet the roots) pretty heavily.
