কলকাতাকে কেন্দ্র করে বাংলায় গ্রীকরা বসবাস শুরু হয়। জানা যায়, ১৭৫০ সালের দিকে বাংলায় তাদের আগমণ ঘটে। এর আগে ইংরেজ ও অন্যান্য ইউরোপীয় শক্তি এখানে ভালোভাবে আসন গেঁড়ে বসে। ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের উদ্দেশে এই অঞ্চলে আসা ইউরোপীয়দের মধ্যে গ্রীকরাই ছিল শেষ সংযোজন।

আর্গাইরিকে বলা হয় কলকাতায় গ্রীক সম্প্রদায়ের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা। আর কলকাতার বাইরে বড় গ্রীক সমাজ গড়ে ওঠে ঢাকা ও নারায়ণগঞ্জে।
