Save Your Goodbyes is probably my most "angsty" song to date. It's about a breakup that sort of blindsided me.
There was so little fanfare, so little drama... just a calm, sudden end to the relationship.
Looking back, I know there were signs. And I know it was hard on her too. This is by no means attacking anyone. It's just about how shocked I felt in that moment.
And so this song was written.
Save Your Goodbyes represents the month of November in my Story of the Seasons album.
While not a traditionally "autumnal" feeling song, I've always sort of associated those wall-of-sound electric guitars with the fall.
Because that's the time of year when I fell in love with Dashboard Confessional, and then the Smashing Pumpkins a few years later.
I also think that fall can convey a feeling of loss, represented by nature dying away to a bleak winter. And as such I've always found break-up songs to be very autumnal as well.
Of course both these rationales are just my own personal preference, but I figured... hey, why not just lean into it?
