About the music

Peer Gynt

"Peer Gynt," a five-act play by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, is a timeless exploration of identity, ambition, and redemption. Written in 1867, this dramatic poem follows the adventurous and often reckless life of its eponymous protagonist, Peer Gynt, who embarks on a fantastical journey across the world in pursuit of fame and fortune. Throughout his travels, Peer encounters a myriad of surreal characters and situations, ultimately facing the consequences of his selfishness and illusions. "Peer Gynt" is renowned for its rich allegorical content and its profound examination of human nature, making it a cornerstone of Norwegian literature and a staple of theatrical repertoires worldwide.

Edvard Grieg

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) stands as one of Norway's most celebrated composers and a leading figure in the Romantic era of music. His compositions, deeply inspired by Norwegian folk music and nationalistic themes, have left an indelible mark on the classical music landscape. Grieg's most famous works include his "Piano Concerto in A minor" and the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt," which features the iconic pieces "Morning Mood" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Through his lyrical melodies, innovative harmonies, and evocative use of folk elements, Grieg has captured the essence of Norwegian culture and continues to enchant audiences around the world.
