I had some existing stud wall shelves next to my basement workshop. Instead of tearing them down, i used them to build shelves for all my milk crate storage. Since they were offset from the concrete wall a few inches i was able to just add two 2x4's and a piece of plywood, centered on the middle of the milk crate. Otherwise i would have needed to add bracing to support the weight. Kind of a unique situation, but this was very effective in my case for providing storage for lots of easily accessible material.
