Spotlight On: Rolex Bezels. Every kind of bezel seen on Rolex watches.

Front and center of the watch’s face is the bezel, or the ring that surrounds and holds down the watch crystal.

Rolex has many different kinds of bezels, whose functionality and design codes are so strong, you can tell that the watch is a Rolex even from afar. Let’s take a look at each of them.

First up are decorative bezels. Apart from securing the crystal onto the watch case, Rolex bezels have also been used for aesthetic purposes.

The Smooth bezel, which is Rolex’s most traditional, are leveled and glossy and can be either flat or domed depending on the model.

While this design is not unique to Rolex; it is considered their most versatile. Its used on their stainless steel, gold, and platinum watches.

Next is the fluted bezel. With its grooves and ridges, it was originally created to help screw down the bezel onto the crystal and provide additional waterproofness.

Today, the fluted bezel’s purpose is purely aesthetic and it is crafted only in solid gold. This gives a fluted-bezeled watch an added mark of elegance.

Rolex also makes gem-set bezels, which use precious gems such as sapphires, and most frequently, diamonds.

They are used to provide extra luster and distinction to the most exclusive and luxurious Rolex timepieces, whether they’re dress-type watches (like the Day-Date) or for sport (like the Daytona).

There are also Functional bezels. For Rolex’s Professional line of watches, the bezel plays an important part in providing specialized and additional information other than the current time.

First of the functional bezels is the Rotatable timer. Seen on the Rolex Submariner, Sea-Dweller and Yachtmaster, it has 60-minute graduations and are used to time events that last up to one hour.

For example, the Submariner’s unidirectional rotating bezel helps divers monitor diving time and decompression stops, in conjuction with the minutes scale.

Meanwhile, theYacht-master has a bi-directional rotating bezel, which is used to count how long it takes to cover a specific distance while sailing.

There’s also the 24-hour bezel – used by the Rolex Explorer and GMT Master. As its name suggests, it is marked with a 24-hour scale and is used to reference another timezone.

With a fixed or stationary bezel like the Rolex Explorer, it can be used to tell nighttime from daytime – like an AM and PM indicator.

Meanwhile, a rotating 24-hour bezel like the GMT Master’s, is used to tell time in another timezone, To do this, the bezel is used in conjunction with the 24-hour arrow hand.

Next is the tachymeter bezel, used by the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The etched bezel is commonly seen on chronograph watches, and is used to measure speeds. It can either tell speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed.

And finally, we have Rolex’s most advanced bezel, the Ring Command, used by its most complicated watches – the Rolex Yachtmaster and Sky-Dweller.

These watches have additional functions that can be too complicated to use the crown or the so called pushers for, so the bezel is used to set these complications. In the Yacht-Master II, the Ring Command bezel is used to set and activate the 10-minute regatta countdown timer.

And there is also the bark finish, which features an even finer, rougher texture than the engine-turned bezel. These are often used in ornate, limited editions of the Day-Date and Datejust, and were most often crafted in yellow gold.

There you have it. All nine, of Rolex bezels, simplified.
