Through the ages, there have been calls for an international official language. Having one would do away with miscommunication and the need for language learning and translation, and an official world language would make travel, business and scholarship either. Never have we been closer to a world lingua franca than we are right now: English is spoken by 1.1 billion people!

So, should English be the Earth's official language?

While it is widely spoken and arguably the leader of the world economy, what about the mass language death an official international language would cause? What about English's troubling past as the language of the oppressors? Would English's implementation as the world's sole official language simply be a continuation of the British Empire's colonial legacy?
