Circular Saw Blades, Types, Uses, and Types of Circular Saws
Circular Saw Material Type
Ripping – A circular saw blade for splitting wood (rip). The hallmark of this one saw blade is the distance between the teeth is less frequent.

Crosscutting – This one saw blade is intended for crosscut cutting, with the characteristic that the distance between the teeth is closer than ripping. However, for the type that is more tightly spaced between the teeth, it is specifically intended for miter saws.

Combination – This one saw blade can be used simultaneously to split wood, as well as to cross cut.

Saw blades usually have between 60-80 teeth that are capable of producing very fine cuts. Even when using the highest quality steel material, the cut can look smooth and shiny.

The split saw blade has fewer teeth, about a minimum of 24 teeth but is capable of producing high thrust speeds when splitting. The saw requires a little effort to 'rip' the wood.

The shape of the sawtooth and how the teeth are attached also affects the quality of the cut/cleavage.

Flat Top (FT)
Used for splitting hard wood and soft wood. With this tooth design, it is very effective to 'cut' the wood fibers when splitting the wood in the direction of the grain.

Alternate Top Bevel (ATB)
The saw teeth are arranged alternately and have sharp angles on the sides to cut the fiber first and then clean the center of the cut line. ATB teeth are usually used for cutting saws.

Combination Tooth (Comb)
The arrangement of teeth like this is usually for saw blades that work for combination, split and cut machines. A common configuration is that every 5 sawtooth has a 4:1 composition, namely four FT teeth and one ATB tooth. For this reason, saws with a Comb configuration usually have a wide chisel hole.

Triple Chip Grind (TCG)
This tooth configuration is used specifically for cutting materials such as multiplex, MDF and plastic. The position of the 'trapezoid' shaped teeth is slightly higher than the flat teeth (FT).

High Alternate Top Bevel (HiATB)
This sawtooth design is capable of producing a very smooth and glossy cut plane. With its beveled/trapezoidal sawtooth shape, it is also capable of cutting hard materials such as melamine sheets (we know it as formica, even though this is actually a well-known brand for this artificial material).
