I hear a lot about follows having less control over the dance than leaders, and therefore having a lesser ability to be creative or expressive. Subsequently, in an effort to gain control, I believe some followers have a tendency to back lead or - more commonly - to over-emphasize variations in their dance, even when that variation doesn't fit.

I believe that follows are NOT lesser creative beings, and that their creative input should not be reduced to their ability to manufacture and execute variations. Lindy Hop is complicated and subtle, so a follower's creativity is not and should not be limited to what the viewer can recognize. However, it has definitely taken me years of dancing in order to come to this understanding.

Here are some of my thoughts on the issue. Hope it's helpful! Let me know your thoughts!
