Something a little different today.

As many of you in Malaysia know at this point, Malaysia was recently railed by the arrival of the controversial academic Bruce Gilley, who in his wonderful speech at the University of Malaya, accused Malaysia's political leaders of calling for a second holocaust.

I have started a Change.org petition about this - please consider signing it, and it has over 400 signatures at this point. Please sign it and consider sharing it as well!

This was wrong, and factually unsubstantiated, by Mr. Gilley, and immediately prompted the University of Malaya to respond.

Initially, I had titled this video something a little more rude, but then I reflected upon it, and gave it its current title. The Tragedy of Bruce Gilley.

If why I think it is a tragedy is a little less obvious than desirable, then consider this. Mr. Gilley was educated at UToronto, the home of Jordan Peterson, Oxford, and Princeton University, where he completed his PhD in political science.

Each of these institutions is a world-leading institution, both tremendously selective and the academic home of renowned scholars who have received training from under the shade of their hallowed halls.

When someone who graduates from these schools fails to understand the simple difference between antisemitism and anti-Zionism and ends up producing leaps of logic upon assumption after unjustified assumption, fails to justify his arguments with evidence, and plays victim as an excuse to have the world look away from his uninteresting scholarship despite graduating from one of these institutions, let alone all of them… Is it not a tragedy?

The University of Malaya kindly invited this person to serve as a standard-bearer, to catalyse the minds and the critical-thinking faculties of the students who would have been under his care had he not done what he did: He proceeded to blame the University of Malaya while casting false aspersions upon the safety of Malaysia as a country that were rapidly refuted by the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

It is tremendously regrettable to see someone whom we of Malaysia, and indeed all of the world, should see as a scholar of the highest repute degenerate into such disgraceful and unbecoming behaviour, that which we do not expect of a professor, but instead of a charlatan obsessed with his ego so much to the point that he does not see that it has entirely covered up the faculty of critical-thinking that had brought him to Princeton in the first place.

Professor Gilley, it is a tragedy that you have forgotten your academic upbringing, and do not demonstrate even a percentage point of the calibre that we had expected you to be able to demonstrate.
