Man in the mirror was composed by Siedah Garrett (lyrics and vocal melody) together with Glen Ballard (piano chords/harmony/melody)
Michael and Quincy contacted with the Gospel Legend; Andraé Crouch who took his choir for this song. They also appear on the songs: Keep the Faith, Will You Be There, Earth Song, Morphine and Speechless.
The choir arrangement was made by Andraé and "The Winans" also participated on the choir recording.

At one point, not long before Michael Jackson's death, Andraé and his sister Sandra met with him to discuss in depth the recording with his choir for several songs, for what would have been his next album. As it was typical during their music sessions with Michael, they would sing and pray together.
