Conventional thinking is that the best way to cultivate future elite athletes is the intensive training of a few high potential children, explains elite sport manager Peter Mattsson, but there is evidence that you get better results by encouraging more children to practice sport. Drawing on real-life examples he shows that we need to adopt this new strategy not only to bring success but also to increase wellbeing of young people. Peter Mattsson is Managing Director of EliteSports2030, a joint project of the Swedish Sports, The Swedish Olympic Committee and the Swedish Paralympic Committee, formed to increase the funding put into Swedish high-performance sports, and to strengthen the support for high performance athletes and teams. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
