TICK AND FLEA REPELLENTS: friends or foes? Flea and tick medications are sometimes the main repellents people use for flea and tick control to keep their dogs and cat safe from illnesses.
In this video, we’ll talk about the 5 families of tick and flea medications:
- neonicotinamids (Advantage, Capstar, Advantix, Seresto, and Vectra)
- Phenylpyrazoles / Fipronyl (Frontline)
- Spinosads (Trifexis, Comfortis)
- Macrocyclic Lactones (Revolution)
- Isoxazolines (Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Credelio)
and we'll see which are spot on tick and flea prevention for dogs and cats, and which are oral tick and flea prevention for dog are cats.
We’ll see how tick and flea medications work, and well as tick and flea medications side effects, some of which can be deadly. We’ll also go over how tick prevention can impact the environment (HINT: negatively!) and I’ll share my story to show you that there times when using commercial flea and tick pesticides might be the best course of action. As always the safest flea and tick prevention for dogs and cats depends on your and your dog's and cat's individual needs.
The best way to prevent ticks depends, of course, on your animal and your environment. Your dog’s health and your cat’s health is the most important factor, and one you need to keep in mind when choosing flea and tick medication… although we prefer to say flea and tick management. Because the reality is that flea and tick medications are actually chemical pesticides, and they can seriously impact your dog and cat’s health, for life, or even kill them. We hope that this series helps you understand what the different options are (and why natural tick and flea remedies and repellents are a valid choice) and how to set an individualized plan specific to your dog’s and cat’s needs.
