Natasha Romanoff finally has her own movie, and with it comes her own theme. She has had a theme before in the MCU, featured in ‘The Avengers’ (2012), and ‘Endgame’ (2019), both composed by Alan Silvestri. As a lover of musical continuity, I had rather hoped it would return in this film, but alas, Lorne Balfe’s new theme is just as good, if not better.

Alexandre Desplat was originally attached to compose the score for this film, and I was excited to see what kind of eccentricities and European sensibilities he would bring to Natasha’s world. However, he was replaced by Lorne Balfe.

The Scottish composer was clearly well-suited for this espionage blockbuster, having previously done great work on ‘Mission: Impossible - Fallout’ (2019). I was very pleasantly surprised by the full-on Russian vocals in this score. Balfe brought a lot of Russian and European textures to this score, and some chord progressions we don’t frequently hear in Marvel movies. It was very refreshing and suits Natasha perfectly.

The songs used in this suite are:

Natasha’s Fragments - Lorne Balfe
Natasha Soars - Lorne Balfe
Natasha’s Lullaby - Lorne Balfe
Last Love - Lorne Balfe
The Descent - Lorne Balfe

The images are from ‘Black Widow’ (2021) and belong to The Walt Disney Company.
