세계일주를 계획하면서 가장 신경을 많이 썼던 나라는 과테말라였다. 원래는 멕시코 칸쿤에서 쿠바를 거쳐 미국 마이애미로 들어가려 했지만, 쿠바는 우리나라와 국교가 없었고, 쿠바와 미국 간의 관계가 좋지 않아서 미국 대륙에서 유일한 공산주의 국가인 쿠바를 방문하면 미국 입국이 어려웠다. 게다가 쿠바는 드론을 반입할 수 없는 나라여서 다른 대안을 찾아야 했다. 그래서 미국으로 바로 들어가기 전에 대안으로 찾은 나라가 바로 칸쿤에서 1시간 30분 거리의 멕시코 이웃 나라, 과테말라였다. 콜롬비아나 코스타리카 등도 고려해보았지만, 중남미 대부분이 치안이 불안한 군부 독재 국가들이라 쉽게 마음이 내키지 않았다. 과테말라도 세계에서 치안이 불안한 나라로 유명했지만, 과테말라시티를 벗어나면 비교적 평온하다는 여행가들의 후기를 보고, 혁명 지도자 체 게바라가 극찬했던 아티틀란 호수를 보고 싶어서 과테말라를 선택했다. 과테말라는 사회적 인프라가 취약하고 대중교통이 거의 없는 저개발 국가여서 곳곳에 위험이 도사리고 있었지만, 세계 여러 나라를 여행하다 보면 겪게 되는 불편함은 감수해야 했다. 하지만 그런 여행을 즐겼던 다양한 이야기를 함께 나누고자 한다.

오전 9시, 칸쿤에서 과테말라시티로 가는 볼라리스 항공편을 이용했다. 평일 아침이라 그런지 승객이 거의 없어 1시간 30분 정도 편하게 이동했다. 공항에 도착하니 한글로 적힌 안내판이 보여 감동이었다. 거대한 실로폰을 연주하는 음악을 들으니 세계에서 가장 위험한 나라라는 선입견이 사라지는 듯했다.

과테말라시티는 세련된 도시의 모습을 띠고 있었다. 현대식 고층 건물, 넓은 도로, 근대화된 사회 기반 시설이 도시의 상징처럼 보였다. 원래는 칸쿤에서 쿠바로 가려 했으나, 쿠바를 경유하면 미국 입국이 어렵고, 쿠바는 아직공산주의를 표방하는 국가인지라 입국 시에 드론 반입이 불가능했기 때문에 과테말라로 목적지를 바꾸었다.

호텔에 짐을 풀고 과테말라시티의 거리를 구경 나갔는데, 거리나 공원 어디에도 사람이 거의 없었다. 나중에 알게 된 반전이 있었지만, 당시 우리는 그 사실을 몰랐다.

한참을 도보로 구경하다가 배가 고파서 길에서 찾은 한국식당을 발견했다. 과테말라의 시골로 가기 전에 한국음식을 먹어두자는 생각에 들어갔다. 우리의 모습을 본 식당 주인은 살아서 들어온 것이 기적이라며, 호텔로 돌아갈 때는 꼭 택시를 타고 가라고 신신당부했다. 대낮에 그것도 외국인이 목에 비싼 카메라를 메고 거리를 활보하는 것은 과테말라에서는 상상도 할 수 없는 일이라고 했다.

'무식하면 용감하다'는 말이 있듯, 우리는 가장 위험하다는 과테말라시티에서 그저 평범한 여행자처럼 행동하고 있었던 것이다. 깜짝 놀란 마음을 진정시키고 우리는 조금 더 안전하다는 마야의 고도 안티구아로 이동했다.
안티구아는 과테말라시티에서 차로 1시간 정도 서쪽에 위치한 고대도시이자 구 과테말라의 수도였다.
과테말라는 사회적 인프라가 취약하고 대중교통이 발달되지 있지 않아서 이동할 때 애로점이 많은 나라이다.

어렵게 도착한 안티구아의 숙소는 오래되고 낡았지만, 자연 그대로의 환경을 잘 활용해 평화롭고 조용한 분위기였다. 또한 주변 관광지를 도보로 이동하기에 편리했다. 안티구아는 과테말라에서 가장 매력적인 역사 도시 중 하나로, 한국의 경주처럼 스페인 식민지 시대의 아름다운 건축물과 유적들이 잘 보존되어 있었다.

1773년 대규모 지진으로 인해 안티구아의 성당 등 많은 건축물이 파괴되었고, 결국 과테말라의 수도는 보다 안전한 현재의 과테말라시티로 옮겨졌다. 그래서인지 안티구아에는 높은 건물이 없다. 수도의 역할을 잃었지만, 안티구아는 과거의 영광을 그대로 간직한 평온한 고대 도시로 남아 있다. 안티구아의 거리를 걸으면 화려하진 않지만, 고전적인 매력이 더 깊이 느껴진다.

공원의 평화로운 분위기와는 달리, 군인들의 무장 순찰은 일상적인 모습이었다. 과테말라는 치안이 극도로 불안한 나라다. 산타 카탈리나 아치는 안티구아의 대표적인 랜드마크로, 과거 수녀들이 통행하기 위해 만든 다리 역할을 했다. 이 아치는 1773년 지진 이후에도 비교적 잘 보존되어 오늘날 안티구아에서 가장 상징적인 장소로 남아 있다.

과테말라시티와 안티구아는 마치 과거와 현재가 나란히 존재하는 듯한 느낌을 주는 두 도시였다. 현대와 고대가 교차하는 이곳에서, 나는 과거와 현재가 조화를 이루는 독특한 경험을 통해 여행의 깊이를 더해갔다.



The country I was most concerned about when planning my world trip was Guatemala. Initially, I planned to travel from Cancun, Mexico, to Cuba, and then enter Miami in the U.S. However, South Korea has no diplomatic relations with Cuba, and because of the strained relationship between Cuba and the U.S., visiting Cuba would make it difficult to enter the U.S. Furthermore, Cuba prohibits the entry of drones, so I needed an alternative. That’s when I found Guatemala, only 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Cancun. Although I considered Colombia and Costa Rica, I hesitated as most countries in Central and South America are known for military dictatorships and poor security. Guatemala also has a reputation for being dangerous, but I chose it after reading reviews that it was relatively peaceful outside Guatemala City. Plus, I wanted to see Lake Atitlán, which was highly praised by Che Guevara.

I took a Volaris flight from Cancun to Guatemala City at 9 a.m., with few passengers on the weekday flight. Upon arrival, I was touched to see signs in Korean, and the music from a giant xylophone helped dispel some of my concerns about Guatemala's safety.

Originally, I planned to visit Cuba, but due to the entry issues and drone restrictions, I changed my destination to Guatemala.

After settling in at the Hotel, I ventured out into the city, but the streets and parks were almost empty. Later, I discovered why. We found a Korean restaurant, and the owner was shocked that we had walked around with expensive cameras in broad daylight. He urged us to take a taxi back to the hotel, warning us that it was dangerous to walk around Guatemala City.

Realizing how risky the situation was, we decided to head to Antigua, which was considered safer. Our accommodation in Antigua was old but peaceful, with a natural atmosphere and conveniently located for sightseeing. Antigua is one of Guatemala’s most attractive historical cities, with well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, much like Gyeongju in Korea.

In 1773, a large earthquake destroyed much of Antigua, leading to the capital being relocated to the safer Guatemala City. Despite losing its status as the capital, Antigua remains a tranquil, ancient city with no tall buildings, preserving its historical charm. Walking through its streets, you can feel the timeless allure of the city.

Despite the peaceful atmosphere, armed soldiers patrolled the streets, a reminder of Guatemala's ongoing security issues. The Santa Catalina Arch, a famous landmark, was built as a bridge for nuns and has survived the 1773 earthquake, making it one of the most iconic sites in Antigua today.

Guatemala City and Antigua felt like two cities where the past and present coexisted.
