Hello radio enthusiasts,
In this video I attempt to demonstrate how I connect directly from one radio to another (peer to peer or "P2P") using Winlink and Vara-HF in Vara Peer-to-Peer mode. This might be very interesting if you like to maintain non-encrypted communications between two stations - you or the other station may be unattended to receive such messages. Its basically e-mail.
Imagine any scenario you like: between friends or family, in a normal day or in an off-grid situation.
How cool is that? This is radio and computer working together to get a message (email) across without "INTERNET".

Keep in mind, this is NOT encrypted and CAN be decoded by other stations that know what the signal is for. For amateur radio operators, it is illegal to perform encrypted communications.
So of course, your messages should not reveal personal identifiable information like your social security number or your credit card details for example.

The frequency I here used is not typically occupied in my area specially during the day. One of the radios (FT-891) was connected to a dummy load, while the other to my antenna dipole with and set to only 5 watts. I made sure to monitor the frequency before making this short demonstration.

The purpose of this video is to help those trying to understand how to send a Peer to Peer message.

Note that, for a P2P message to successfully go from one station to the other, the other station must also be "listening" in peer to peer mode. Otherwise, your P2P call will go unanswered and your message to that station will not be delivered.
Peer to Peer messages will not go out if you connect to a Winlink RMS Gateway (VARA HF Winlink).

You can test this in your own environment like I did here at home or, work with a friend to attempt a connection between yours and their station. I did try this before with my friend Don, KM4UDX.

A thank you and 73 to Julian, OH8STN ‪@OH8STN‬ for getting me inspired and curious to research about such modes of operation and also to Don KM4UDX for asking folks to connect to his station.
