The special-edition hot hatch looks cool thanks to different wheels and other visual tweaks, but sadly the U.S. version doesn't get the power bump that Europeans enjoy.

Volkswagen is celebrating the 20th birthday of R-badged Golf hot hatchbacks, but the special-edition model we're getting in the U.S. isn't quite as cool as the version sold in Europe. While the Golf R 20 Years overseas gets a 14-hp bump for its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, Americans will instead get the 2023 Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition with the same 315 horsepower as other versions of the Golf R.

To be fair, the anniversary model only costs $650 more than the standard model, starting at $46,035 with the six-speed manual and $46,835 with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. (It's also worth noting that the Europe-market 20 Years car doesn't offer a manual at all.) For that small sum, you get a whole host of visual changes, including 20th anniversary badging for the B-pillars, blue "R" logos inside and out, and special puddle lights that project a "20R" graphic on the ground. The interior receives carbon-fiber trim, and black 19-inch wheels are standard.

The 20th Anniversary model is available in blue, black, or white. If you choose white or black, the mirror caps are finished in blue. If you choose blue, the mirrors are black. The panoramic sunroof that's standard on the Golf R is deleted for the special-edition car, which VW says saves weight.

Around 1800 units of the 20th Anniversary Edition will be offered in the U.S., and they'll arrive at dealerships later this fall.

VW feiert 20 Jahre R-Modelle mit dem Golf R 20 Years. Das Sondermodell basiert auf dem 333 PS starken Golf R Performance. Wir führten die Edition zur Probefahrt aus.

Diese Funktion ist eine von vielen Upgrades, die der VW Golf R Performance im Vergleich zum regulären Golf R bekommen hat. Dazu zählt auch die Leistungssteigerung des intern EA888 genannten 2.0 TSI – Benziners um 13 auf 333 PS. Das maximale Drehmoment bleibt mit 420 Nm (zwischen 2.100 und 5.500/min.) gleich.

Eine Torque-Vectoring-Funktion des Allradantriebs, ein größerer Dachspoiler und die auf 270 km/h angehobene Höchstgeschwindigkeit bringt die Performance ebenso mit wie die Fahrmodi "Special" (abgestimmt auf der Nürburgring-Nordschleife) und "Drift".

Stolze 59.995 Euro kostet das Sondermodell, auf den ersten Blick ist es über 4.000 Euro teurer als der Golf R Performance. Wird dieser mit Lederausstattung (beim 20 Years auch abwählbar) und "Black Style"-Paket mit LED-Leiste im Grill ausgestattet, verringert sich der Aufpreis des Golf R 20 Years auf rund 1.000 Euro. Dafür bekommt man die Karbon-Einlagen innen und die blauen Designdetails. Im VW-Sprech außerdem die Gewissheit "ein Sammlerstück" zu erwerben. Ein Jahr lang soll die 20-Years-Edition bestellbar sein. Also wohl bis zum geplanten Facelift der aktuellen Golf-Generation.

Mehr geht aber wohl immer. Unser Testwagen, der sämtliche Optionen aus dem Konfigurator in sich versammelt hat, bringt es auf einen Listenpreis von heftigen 70.120 Euro.

VW feiert 20 Jahre R-Modelle mit einem Sondermodell. Der Golf R 20 Years bringt spezielle Designdetails und erstmals Karbon-Elemente im Innenraum. Lecker ist die technische Basis in Form des überarbeiteten Golf R Performance mit jetzt 333 PS. Feintuning an Motor und Getriebe zeigt die Hingabe der Entwickler, auch wenn man wohl erst auf einer Rennstrecke die Unterschiede zum regulären Golf R richtig spüren dürfte.
