RVSM stands for Reduced Vertical Separation Minima.

The main advantage of an RVSM airspace is the possibility to maintain a vertical separation of 1000 feet between two aircraft that are flying in opposite directions.

The RVSM Airspace starts from FL 290 and ends at FL 410 included.

In a non-rvsm Airspace, the aircraft have to maintain 2000 feet vertical separation minimum when flying below FL290 and above FL410.

This was so because the Altimeters, at high altitudes, are not very reliable.

However, with the introduction of the RVSM, the aircraft minimum separation, above FL290 and below FL 410, has been reduced to 1000 feet.

In order to fly within an RVSM airspace, the Aircraft and the Pilots need to be certified.

Depending on the technical problem that an aircraft may have, it could lose the RVSM capability.

If, for any reason, the Pilot is not RVSM compliant he/she needs to inform the Air Traffic Controller immediately and descend or climb out of the RVSM airspace.

The implementation of such Airspace increased by double the amount of Flight Levels available for Commercial Aircrafts.

RVSM has improved the efficiency and the punctuality of the commercial air operation a lot.

The Pilots are able to fly closer to their Optimum Flight Level also, the delay has been reduced a lot because the capacity of the airspace has improved substantially.
