On July 1st, a new state law went into effect increasing penalties for public use and possession of illegal drugs. However, the enforcement provisions of the law don’t fully go into effect until August 15th. In the meantime, Spokane Police continue to enforce a City Ordinance that prohibits drug use in public spaces, while awaiting stronger enforcement ability with the new state law. Since SPD began enforcement on May 11, police have made more than 100 arrests for drug use and are putting users on notice that simple possession will soon be enforceable as well – take a look.
