Looking for an EASY way to clean silver at home without any scrubbing or harsh chemicals? Watch this video to learn how to clean your silver platters, utensils, and serving pieces using household items. All you need is baking soda, salt, aluminum foil, and hot water.
MATERIALS
Baking soda
Salt
Aluminum foil
Tongs
Optional: toothbrush
DIRECTIONS
Measure out 1-2 gallons of water in a large pot (I often use 2 gallons to fill up the large side of my sink)
Heat the water to boiling
Place a stopper in the sink, and then lay down one sheet of aluminum foil
For every gallon of water, add 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of salt to the sink
Once the water is boiling, pour it into the sink (note: the mixture will react and begin to bubble)
Use the tongs to stir and dissolve the baking soda and salt into the water
Use the tongs to add silver to the water
Note: the silver item needs to touch the aluminum foil to allow transfer of the tarnish
Let the silver item sit for 1-2 minutes, turning with tongs if needed
BE CAREFUL - the water is super hot
Remove item for the water using tongs
Repeat this process for as many items as needed
It there is still stuck on tarnish, you can create a paste of baking soda and water and gently scrub with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush
To add a little shine to the pieces, spray with Windex or a mixture of vinegar and water and buff with a soft cloth
Rinse the silver pieces and dry with a cloth
