As the world shifts away from fossil fuels to a cleaner future, the battle to control the next generation of commodities is heating up.
The metallic elements lithium, cobalt and nickel have driven production of the electric batteries that power our smartphones and cars. But a single country controls the supply of these critical minerals. China holds a 77% share of the supply of cobalt; nearly 70% of lithium, also known as white gold; and nearly 60% of nickel. Dubbed a “single-member OPEC,” what challenges does China’s domination of the supply chain for these critical metals pose to other countries?
