I have several packs of IOD Air Dry Clay I bought from another retailer and they have dried out so I decided to see if I could revive them.

I used an old pickle jar and a little bit of bottled water. However, it would be best to use distilled water so that you do not introduce any impurities that may cause your clay to mold.

I also suggest that you use about half the amount of water that I used initially. It really was too much and I believe I poured some out on the second day.

It took about a week for mine to get to where it was the consistency of the original clay, but that was mainly because I forgot to check it multiple times. It probably would have been usable in the first 3 to 4 days if I’d had the time to let it dry out a little (and watch it to make sure it didn’t dry too much).

Someone mentioned that the really wet clay is called “slip“ and can be used to fill in cracks. So that’s an option for your dried out clay as well.

I did also add the really slippery clay to the mould and just spread it all over but didn’t really make it even. Then I left the clay in the mould for a day, and it did dry. I did have to break off excess clay around my pieces, but it does still work if you can’t quite get the consistency that you want to be able to de-mould immediately but not waste your clay.

I think, possibly adding cornstarch to the extremely wet clay could have helped to dry out that clay faster as well, but these are all things that take experimenting.

Even on the first and second days, the outer sections of the clay were really soft, but the inside was still pretty hard. That is why kneading the clay every day is necessary.

Your clay may start out drier than mine or not quite as dry as mine was so you will need to vary the amount of water you use. The results are really going to vary and you’ll need to experiment. I will definitely start with less water the next time I do this because I can always add more if I need.
