Gimbals typically are used to stabilize your video. But mounted on a tripod, it can also use the pan and tilt in combination with the video imagery to track things of interests. Particularly such as recording sporting events or just recording yourself.

I found that you could definitely fool it if you jump around out of frame enough. So you have to know it's limits in order to use the automatic tracking effectively. In the selfie mode, I found that it even would zoom in in some cases and tracks the frame so that your eyes are roughly 1/3 from the top of the screen, a reasonably good enough framing.
