Knowles was uneasy with the idolatry bestowed upon him by Wolves fans and came to resent the game for producing what he considered his "bad attitude towards people."

With his faith in football in question, a chance call at his Wolverhampton home by a Jehovah's Witness resulted in Knowles discovering faith outside the game and ultimately the peace and contentment that he firmly believed could not be found as a professional footballer.
