When I found a gold set of metallic watercolour paints for only £1 in The Range, I could not resist a bargain. Usually I am really sniffy about cheap paints, but I thought I would give them a go - after all, what did I have to lose? I did a full review of the coloured set here:    • Testing cheap metallic watercolours   and then I used the gold set on white paper:   • Metallic watercolour painting for beg...   I thought it would be fun to contrast the same painting but on black watercolour paper. The birch forest is the perfect subject to use the gold and copper hues and shows us how to mask, glaze, add detail and use sgrifitto.

This sort of subject is really simple to do. You can mask out the trunks with masking tape or masking fluid and then splash paint around till your heart is content. Then it's a case of adding in the bark markings and a few bits of detail. I think you will really enjoy it.
