It's still the weather event by which all others are measured in Southern New England: the Blizzard of '78.

The snow came on Monday, Feb. 6, 1978.

About a month after the storm, WJAR produced a special broadcast called "Six Snowbound Days: A Television Chronicle." It followed the blizzard from the predictions to the heavy snow that stranded thousands of people -- some in their cars -- for days.

"These cars never moved from the highway after the so-called plug was formed Monday night," the narrator intoned.

The timeline continued through the effort to dig out and get the region moving again.

"For the first time, television was as much a part of the great Blizzard of '78 as snowplows," the special reported.

"Six Snowbound Days" earned WJAR a regional Emmy Award in 1978.
