A few weeks ago, we got to see the official trailer for Netflix’s Avatar The Last Airbender live-action series. In this video we got to appreciate how Netflix managed to meet our expectations, so far that is, and showed us that they were being faithful to the original animated series. Not only that, but we also saw how the visual effects would look like in this live-adaptation. And boy were we amazed with the quality of these.
There was one visual effect that really stood out at the end of this trailer. Just in case, let’s watch this short scene so you know what I’m talking about… As you can see, in this short clip it was shown how Aang’s eyes and tattoos started glowing. But, what exactly is this? What does it mean? Hardcore fans of the original series recognize this without any issue at all. But for those of you who don’t know, this efect is called “The Avatar State” and in this clip we got to see how Aang was accesing this ability. But what exactly is The Avatar State you may ask?
Although we get to see Ang entering “The Avatar State” a couple of times in the first season, it isn’t until the first episode of the second season of Avatar The Last Airbender that it is explained by Avatar Roku. He says "The Avatar State is a defense mechanism, designed to empower you with the skills and knowledge of all the past Avatars. The glow is the combination of all your past lives, focusing their energy through your body. In the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful, but you are also at your most vulnerable. If you are killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken and the Avatar will cease to exist."
