We drove from Bangalore to Chennai, as you can see in our latest previous episode, and we arrived in Chennai at 1 pm after a 7-hour drive.
And we have a trip to Mahabalipuram planned on the same day.

Mahabalipuram is reachable by Air, train, or road.

By Air -
Mahabalipuram doesn't have an airport for air travel. The one closest to you is Chennai Airport, which is located about 52 kilometres away. All major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore, are easily accessible from there. From there, you can easily take a taxi to Mahabalipuram.

By train -
Chengalpattu and Chennai Railhead are the two closest railway stations. Chengalpattu is around 22 km away, whereas Chennai's railhead is about 60 miles away. You can take a taxi from here to Mahabalipuram.

By road -
buses operated by Tamil Nadu Public Transport Services travel to Mahabalipuram from many states. Additionally, there are private bus services available. The roads leading to Mahabalipuram are in excellent condition. You can therefore drive yourself or hail a cab to get there.

Timings: 6.00am to 6.00pm

Best time to visit –
Winter months from November to February are considered the best to visit the place. The temperature is generally above 16°C, making the weather pleasant and favourable. It is the best time for sightseeing as well as adventure sports.
Avoid visiting Mahabalipuram in the months of March and April as the temperature can go as high as 42°C, making it difficult for you to bear the heat. So plan your trip accordingly as per the weather conditions

History –
Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is a historic city and UNESCO World Heritage City in Tamil Nadu. The early history of this place takes us to the ancient mariners who considered this place the land of the Seven Pagodas. There are other sets of people who think that Mahabalipuram suffered from a great flood between 10,000 and 13,000 BCE. There is this controversial historian Graham Hancock who surveyed the ocean bed and is more inclined to believe the flood theory.
Different opinions exist about the origin of the name of the site too. The well-known explanation is that the place is named after benevolent King Bali, also known as Mahabali while the ancient Indian text of Vishnu Puran documents his exploits. “Puram” is a Sanskrit term for a city whereas Mamallapuram is the Prakrit version of the original Sanskrit name.
It is one of the oldest temples made of stone in South India. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram was named so because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The temple complex has 3 temples which have a beautiful architectural designs. The shrines are dedicated to the Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu. There is also a Lion Monolith structure in the compound of the complex which attracts a lot of tourists. This temple is a must-visit in Mahabalipuram.
The Shore Temple is located on the beach and if local lore is to be trusted it is the one surviving structure of the legendary Seven Pagodas. Despite the continuous erosive effects of the moist and salty sea air, the Shore Temple preserves its beauty in many parts. Built between 700 and 728 CE during the reign of Narasimhavarman II, this is indeed a remnant of a larger complex of temples and civil structures much of which lies under the depth of the sea now.
This five-story edifice is so situated that the first rays of the rising sun fall on the presiding deity of the temple, Shiva. Visitors enter the premises through a barrel-vaulted gopuram (gateway). The shikhara (roof) of the actual shrine resembles a pyramidal structure. Like other remarkable structures at Mahabalipuram, this too is embellished with intricate bas-reliefs. Monolithic sculptures are also seen scattered about the temple complex.
