Haiphong is a major industrial city, the second largest city in the northern part of Vietnam, and third largest city overall in Vietnam. It is the third most populous city in Vietnam, with a population of 2.103.500 for the metropolitan area (2015), encompassing an area of 1,507.57 km², 46,1 % of population reside in the urban districts.
