Electricity generation is the process of producing primary energy from electricity and other sources. The basic principles of electricity generation were discovered by British scientist Michael Faraday in the 1820s and early 1830s. His basic method is still used today: Electricity is produced by moving a conductive wire, such as copper, through a magnetic field. An electric generator is a machine that contains wrapped conductive wires rotating inside a magnet, and produces electric current by rotating these wires inside the magnet. In order to obtain the large amounts of electrical energy we need in our homes, workplaces and industry, we need large power plants that will rotate electrical generators. Most power plants produce heat to spin the generator. Fossil fuel power plants burn natural gas, coal and oil to produce heat. Nuclear power plants also produce heat by breaking down uranium fuel. However, all these different types of power plants use the heat they produce to convert water into steam. The resulting steam is fed to the turbine connected to the electric generator. As water vapor passes over thousands of blades on the turbine shaft, it rotates the turbine shaft by using the energy it received from the previously generated heat. This rotation is the mechanical movement that the generator needs to produce electricity. The electricity generated in the generator is sent to the place where it will be used via conductive wires called transmission lines. The steam coming out of the turbine, whose energy, in other words, its pressure and temperature, have decreased, is cooled in the section called condenser and converted into water, and then sent back to the heat producing section of the power plant to be used again. Water from seas, lakes or rivers is used to provide cooling in the condenser.
