Title: Structure recovery on directed and higher-order networks with Laplacian matrices
Event: (HTAW01) Theory and applications of hypergraphs
Abstract: The spectral properties of Laplacian matrices provide significant insights into graph structures, particularly through the embedding of nodes into low-dimensional Euclidean spaces using eigenvectors, which helps recover underlying connection patterns. This embedding is useful for tasks such as node reordering, clustering, and visualization. In this talk, we investigate mathematical frameworks using graph Laplacians for directed networks and higher-order networks. We specifically establish connections between node reordering techniques, achieved by minimizing an objective function, and maximizing the likelihood of a random graph model. Using this framework, we compare the likelihood of structures and perform learning tasks such as clustering and link prediction. Numerical experiments are conducted with synthetic and real-world graphs from social sciences, biology, and ecology.
