Johan Krouthén: Swedish Realist and Idealist Painter of Landscapes and Portraits

Johan Krouthén (1858–1932) was a Swedish artist renowned for breaking away from traditional academic styles to embrace Realism and Idealism. Born in Linköping, Krouthén studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts before briefly heading to Paris, where he further honed his craft. He spent time with the Skagen Painters in Denmark, focusing on landscapes rather than the typical scenes of fishermen. Returning to Sweden, Krouthén gained recognition for his garden paintings and portraits, often using photography as a basis for his work. The death of his wife, Hulda, in 1891 profoundly affected his art, leading to a shift in his style. Later in life, Krouthén moved to Stockholm, where his work became more repetitive, catering to client demands. Despite this, his legacy endures, blending naturalism with idealistic touches.
