Concert: TIGER TRIO

The three improvisation masters Joëlle Léandre, Nicole Mitchell and Myra Melford have been forming the Tiger Trio for several years now. Their music is disciplined and focused; and their interaction is based on mutual understanding and unifying team spirit – unlike their name Tiger Trio or even the title of their album unleashed it may suggest.

French double bassist Joëlle Léandre is an icon of free improvised music, which, in addition to her varied activities in Europe, also cultivates intensive international relations. Her mentors and close friends included John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi, and she has played and recorded with many of the best and most interesting improvised music artists, including Steve Lacy, Barre Philips, Peter Kowald, Anthony Braxton, Irène Schweizer, Jon Rose, Lauren Newton, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, George Lewis, Susie Ibarra, Maggie Nicols and Marilyn Crispell.

Flutist Nicole Mitchell and pianist Myra Melford are both at home on the US West Coast. Nicole Mitchell has developed a unique improvisational language and has repeatedly been named “Top Flutist of the Year” by the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010–2017). In 2011 she received the Alpert Award in the Arts. Originally coming from Chicago’s innovative music scene of the late 1990s, Mitchell's music celebrates contemporary African American culture. She is the founder of the Black Earth Ensemble, of Black Earth Strings, Sonic Projections and Ice Crystal and composed for contemporary ensembles of varying cast and size. She was the first woman to chair the prestigious Chicago Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

The Chicago-born and classically trained pianist Myra Melford is also a composer and in her piano improvisations influenced by Chicago blues, architecture, jazz and experimental music. She was a Guggenheim Fellow to realize her multimedia project Language of Dreams (2013), Doris Duke Performing Artist (2013) and in 2012, just one year after Nicole Mitchell, received the Alpert Award in the Arts. She also received several awards in the Down Beat Critics Polls and the Jazz Journalist Association.

The three develop in their interaction empathic relationships that lead to positive and graceful musical visions. Their music is often pervasive and intriguing in the complex network of communication that they establish with each other.
