The Parthenon is a temple built in honor of the goddess Athena, patroness of the city of Athens. It was the result of the collaboration of important architects and sculptors in the middle of the 5th BC. century. The era of its construction coincides with the ambitious expansion plans of Athens and the political prestige that followed against its allies during the period of Athenian Hegemony in Ancient Greece. The architects of the Parthenon were Iktinos and Kallikrates. From the period of Late Antiquity onwards, the temple was vandalized and later turned into a Christian church, an Islamic mosque and after the Greek Revolution
