Watch John Foelber work with a hot kiln (1450F) and two different methods of smoking the pottery.
When the piece cools a bit he scrapes off a thin layer of clay (called slip). This reveals the smoky veining pattern on the unglazed (naked) surface. After cleaning, the piece is sealed to protect the smoke pattern. It's a lot of fun as we never know exactly how a piece will turn out!
