हेज के अनुसार " वस्तुतः 16 वीं सदी के आरंभ मे बौद्धिक जागृति के फलस्वरूप बहुसंख्यक ईसाई कैथोलिक चर्च के कटु आलोचक थे और चर्च की संस्था मे मूलभूत परिवर्तन चाहते थे। इसी सुधारवादी प्रयास के फलस्वरूप जो धार्मिक आन्दोलन हुआ और ईसाई धर्म के जो नवीन धार्मिक सम्प्रदाय अस्तित्व मे आये, वह सामूहिक रूप से धर्म सुधार आंदोलन कहलाते है।"

Reformation, also called Protestant Reformation, the religious revolution that took place in the Western church in the 16th century. Its greatest leaders undoubtedly were Martin Luther and John Calvin. Having far-reaching political, economic, and social effects, the Reformation became the basis for the founding of Protestentism one of the three major branches of Christianity.
