After faking their deaths to re-enlist in the Second Battalion, Sharpe discovers that these recruits are being auctioned off to other regiments by his old enemy, Sir Henry Simmerson. Sharpe decides to escape with this knowledge and devises a plan with the help of Lady Jane Gibbons.
