It's time for some wild camping! That's right, we head off to do some dispersed camping and backcountry camping in the Northwoods of Wisconsin along the Ice Age Trail. The campground is a tiny little boondocking campground called the New Wood County Park Campground, which runs right along the Ice Age Trail. This campground offers free camping at dedicated sites between labor day and memorial day. This is an excellent option of winter backpacking or longer hikers on the Ice Age Trail. The dispersed camping available consists of seven primitive camping sites that run directly beside the Wisconsin River! Tent camping on this winter campout was a real blast, filled with lovely views from the Ice Age Trail Grandfather Falls Segment and direct views of the Wisconsin River.

On this trip, not only were we doing some primitive camping, but also some winter backpacking and winter camping. Winter backcountry camping can be challenging so it's important to have a solid winter backpacking gear loadout before heading out on long backpacking trips. In fact, the whole purpose of the trip was to test out some new winter backpacking gear in cold temperatures. We have a new sleeping pad, the Thermarest Neoair Xtherm to test, a new 0 degree backpacking quilt, the Enlightened Equipment Revelation 0 Degrees Quilt and we also tested a new backpacking stove. It was fun to test the Firebox Nano Backpacking stove in real conditions in order to determine it's suitability for longer trips. Overall we had a blast doing from free camping and backcountry camping in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. We love Wisconsin camping, we love tent camping, we love primitive camping and we love winter backpacking. What a fun backpacking adventure!
