In “I Cheerfully Refuse,” Minnesota writer Leif Enger (Peace Like a River, So Brave, Young, and Handsome, and Virgil Wander) takes us on an epic adventure that begins with heartbreak, and ends with hope. Set in the near distant future, the story starts when a musician, named Rainy, and his beloved wife, Lark, take in a troubled stranger who is running from unnamed evil. When that decision leads to loss, Rainy turns to the open waters of Lake Superior to search for healing in a world that still has the power to surprise him. Enger, a former Minnesota Public Radio reporter, said he began writing "I Cheerfully Refuse” during the dark days of the pandemic, when he needed a “north star” to guide him to shore. “It was a pick me up … every day. It was as if my characters were waiting there to meet me and guide me through the day."
