We never turn people down on an offer to take us on an adventure. So when Mario said he’d show us around some off-the-beaten-path spots to hike in the desert, we had to say yes!

As soon as we parked the vans (after airing down the tires so we don’t get stuck), we headed out into the wilderness. Right away, we could see that this wouldn’t be an ordinary hike. With scenery reminiscent of The Narrows in Bryce Canyon, we couldn’t believe that we had this place all to ourselves.

As we hiked, Mario shared with us the natural and geologic history of the area, showing us how ancient lava flows and rainfall shaped the landscape into something beautiful and unique. After a little while, we reached water to wade through. The humans welcomed the chance to cool down in the cold mountain stream. Paco, however, went to great lengths trying to keep his paws dry.

This was an amazing hike and one we won’t forget. As always, we are incredibly grateful to the people we meet as we travel who so kindly offer to share these special experiences with us.
