Amul is an acronym for Anand Milk Union Limited, owned by Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation based in Anand. It operates under the cooperative department of the Gujarat government and is managed by its 3.6 million milk producer members. The organization was founded in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, who is considered the father of the cooperative movement in India. He appointed Varghese Kurian in 1949 as general manager to direct the cooperative's technical and marketing efforts. After Patel's death in 1994, Kurian became the chairman of Amul and was instrumental in Amul's marketing success. Later the country respectfully called him the Milkman of India and the Father of India's White Revolution. Amul became the largest producer of milk and milk products in the country and significantly promoted India's white revolution. Today, Amul's products are very popular in foreign countries as well.
Amul was founded in December 1946 as a reaction against the exploitation of small dairy farmers by Bombay-based Paulson's traders and agents. Frustrated with Paulson's monopoly, the farmers of Kaira, led by Tribhuvandas Patel formed a cooperative. Thus they were able to supply their milk directly to Bombay without giving it to Paulson. Co-operatives were formed in each village where there were only small farmers and thus in June 1948 they were able to start their own pasteurizing unit.
In 1970, the cooperative led India's "White Revolution". India's White Revolution or Operation Flood made dairy farming India's largest self-sustaining rural employment and in 1998 overtook the United States to make India the world's largest producer of milk.
Today, Amul is a leading food brand with more than 500 quality products like Amul Butter, Amul Milk Powder, Amul Ghee, Amul Cheese, Amul Chocolates, Amul Ice Cream, Amul Milk, Amulya and more in demand both in India and abroad.
