This Legendary Rock band knew that this song would be really big. So It was perplexing when it finished in 3rd place out of the four singles released from their 1981 blockbuster album Escape. I’m talking about Don’t Stop Believin’ By Journey. It was a strange song in that Steve Perry’s immaculately sung chorus doesn’t show up until the last 30 seconds of the song and Neal Schon has a blazing solo in the first 30 seconds but it’s promise would grow over the decades after it was released and when Glee wanted to cover it in their landmark episode the Neal Schon in our interview said he was pretty nervous that it would ruin the song and turn it into Mary Poppins, taking all of the Heaviness out of it. Instead it helped turn it into the biggest selling digital rock single ever. In a star studded episode including Carlos Santana, Toto, Sammy Hagar and Panic! at the Disco, we get the story from the principal band members of Journey including Co-writers Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain and current lead singer Arnel Pineda…

it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and Hotel California by The Eagles amongst others But today we have a star studded episode with Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana, toto, Panic at the Disco and principal members of the rock and roll hall of fame band Journey to break down the making and meaning of the their monumental 80s anthem Don’t Stop Believin’ the biggest selling digital rock song ever.

Written by the legendary trio of founder guitarist Neal Schon, GOAT Singer Steve Perry and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, here we have an in depth look at what inspired every part of this song from the guitar solo in the first few seconds that scared the hell out of record executives to the Chorus being almost an afterthought.

How the song went from being an also ran of their massive album escape with two songs doing better to its resurgence in it’s use in the Sopranos and Glee which made Guitar Neal Schon very nervous to the way it has blown other legends away who are still in awe of the power of this incredible anthem.
